The Bleeding Heart is a fast growing pioneer species. It goes up quickly (it only has a lifespan of approximately 5 years) and provides shade, thus allowing natural reforestation to occur below. It gets the name bleeding heart because its leaves turn red when they die. Various birds eat the fruit, including the Brown Cuckoo Dove, Silvereye and Lewin's Honeyeater.
